Fick's First Law. A balloon with a closed sphere shape and a 1 mm thickness is filled
Question:
Fick's First Law. A balloon with a closed sphere shape and a 1 mm thickness is filled with helium gas. The concentration of helium inside the balloon is 6.022x10^23 atoms/m^3 and is effectively 0 outside the balloon. The diffusivity constant of helium through its latex wall is 710-9 m^2/s at room temperature. You can assume that helium concentration inside the balloon remains constant
(a) What is the flux of helium gas through the latex balloon? Make sure to indicate if the flux is outward or inward.
(b) If the initial radius of the balloon is 10 cm, how long does it take for the balloon to become empty of helium? You should assume that the balloon is tightly closed, and mass transfer only happens through diffusion across the balloon's wall. It is reasonable to assume a steady state diffusion.
Please solve both parts! Thanks!
