Film reactions are short essays that will be assessed on how well students are able to apply one of the theories or viewpoints from a course text to the film itself. These assignments ask students to integrate critical thinking skills across two different media via clear, concise, argumentative writing. A film reaction is not a review or a summary, but should be an analysis and a reaction. It should discuss the issues raised by the film, address the film's importance and purpose, state reactions to the content and quality of the film, and connect it to ideas and material presented in class. Film reactions will be between 600-900 words and will follow standard MLA format and language. A sample film reaction will be posted to Blackboard and discussed in class before the assignment is due. The film reactions should do the following. Describe the film in general terms. What subjects and ideas does it cover? Describe the plot and setting. What issues does it raise? What do you see as the main purpose of the film? Evaluate the film for quality and interest. Comment on screenplay, acting, direction, production value, or music. What techniques does the film use, such as symbolism or foreshadowing? Relate the film to class discussion and readings. How does the film contradict or support ideas we have discussed in class? Identify an author and a reading we have done for class that you feel the film specifically reacts to. Summarize what you feel are the strengths or the weakness of the film.
