Creating the Sustainable Spal Often associated with major resort hotels and other luxy establishments, spas are appealing destinations for people intent on relaxation and well-being. It is only logical, then, that spa surroundings should reflect a commitment to a larger wellness issue, the health and welfare of the environment. A great number of spas in the United States have determined that maintaining an emphasis on the environment is good for business. Such an emphasis comes at a cost, however. It is certainly not cheap to rework a spa so that it has as little impact on the environment as possible. In fact, it requires a considerable financial investment, but one that is a solid gesture of environmental commitment from owners and builders. "Reducing our impact on the earth is always our first priority when we design a new spa location" explains Annette Tyler, founder and CEO of Portland's Platinum LEED-rated La Creel Natural Spa. "With the opening of our latest spa and nail bar in Marino, it is very important to us that we continue our commitment, but at a higher level, as we seek higher LEED specifications than any of our current facilities." Such commitment by leading spa owners is indicative of the increased emphasis on green facilities nationwide. Being environmentally responsible is more than a buzzword with such establishments; it is a way of life in an industry that values awareness of its surroundings. Seeking LEED Certification LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification is a mark of excellence for over 900 hotels and resorts. It is the accepted standard for determining a building's sustainability. Achieving LEED certification is proof that an establishment is genuinely green. The LEED rating system is developed and managed by the U.S. Green Building Council, based in Washington, DC. It promotes building design and construction procedures that improve the health of people in and around the buildings. The building should also decrease negative effects on the environment as a result of its operation A spa can achieve LEED certification at four levels-Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Ratings are based on how well the building is designed in terms of water efficiency. energy and atmosphere, sustainable sites, materials and resources, and the quality of the indoor environment. In his book on greening trends in the spa industry, Steven Clairday, states that at least 50 percent less could have been spent on building new environmentally-aware hotels and spas during the past five years if they had been built instead with what are considered conventional building practices. However, the owners felt that it was more important to give back part of what had been taken, to preserve and protect a site for future generations, and to conserve a site's beauty and integrity. Living in Harmony with Nature We are all part of one world and we must conserve everything we can for the future. Strain believes that our well-being is directly connected to the health of the planet. She writes, "What good is it to spend several hours in a beautiful and relaxing spa environment, and then go back into an unhealthy world?" Experts agree that mind, health, body, and the environment are unalterably intertwined The blend of energy efficiency and elegance found at Lake Sumatra Spa in Austin, Texas is evident in the native landscaping, water reduction program (water saving aerators, showerheads, and toilet flow diverters), sustainable materials usage, clean air standards, recycling programs, and free parking for guests arriving in alternative fuel vehicles. The Green Spa Network Journal reports that Lake Sumatra Spa sets a high benchmark for other spas seeking to participate in the green spa movement. Sarah Lucida, Vice President of Spa Development and Operations for the Green Spa Council, served on a sustainability task force for the Global Spa Association (GSPA) five years ago, emphasizing greater environmental stewardship among spas. Proposing "seed spas," Lucida suggested that spas undergo eco audits, enabling the identification and sharing of best practices in the industry. She suggests that spas lead the charge for major resorts to recognize their impact not only on the environment in which they are situated, but also on guests who share in and become educated by a hotel's response to its environment Detoxifying the personal care industry is of special concem to Mark Whittaker, chair of the National Personal Product Safety Board. He works closely with the Global Spa Network to enable spa professionals to select chemically clean and ethically produced skin and personal care products. Whittaker, who gave a presentation at the recent Global Spa Network Initiative, spoke about the lack of transparency, traceability, and accountability in standards for skin/personal care products in the United States. He suggested an assessment tool for determining the level of accountability expected of a green spa Green spas are naturally healthy and relaxing. By putting aside the stressors of modem life, including toxins and waste, an ecologically-aware spa is able to balance nature with relaxation. A spa that is attuned to the rhythms of nature as well as the human body can encourage harmony so that patrons feel healthier, stronger, and more attractive. Finally, a sustainable spa is good business. Although initial costs may be high, the benefits are usually great with respect to reputation and enhanced business. In fact, spas usually begin to pay for themselves within two years, due to increased energy efficiency. The future of our planet is not something to be brushed aside. Responsible spa owners encourage the optimal wellness of patrons as well as the environment as they look ahead to meet the needs of the future.
