From the sample article entitled "Flame retardants: Human hair and nails can tell toxic secrets, dated March 02, 2016, found in sciencedaily.com, it was mentioned that a research conducted at Indiana University led to the discovery of the presence of flame retardants, a potentially harmful chemicals used as an additive to both commercial and consumer goods, in human hair, toenails and fingernails. This study, participated by 50 students in Bloomington, was also able to unveil the association of the presence of the flame retardants with the different factors, to include, obesity, learning disabilities, neurotoxicity and reproductive toxicity, and endocrine disruption. With that, the researchers were able to demonstrate that hair and nails can be used to measure the quantity of these chemicals in humans and it revealed a strong relationship between the levels of polybrominated diphenyl ethers or PBDEs in hair and nails and those in serum. There are various questions that a scientist might ask about this study. Sample questions are as follows: What is the significant amount of hair and nail that could be potentially lethal to an individual with PICA?
