Gas turbine operated on Brayton cycle used for electric utility as separated or combined cycles with steam power plant. Broadly speaking, gas turbine cycle is preferred over steam power plant in power station. Therefore, your head of department asked you to investigate and study the possibility of upgrading the power plant in Project-1 to a gas turbine cycle or a combination of both. However, your head of department asked to deliver a report showing you professional evaluation and assessment for gas turbine cycle efficiency. This report will be used to convince the company board committee. Task.1 Your selection was a gas-turbine power plant operating on an ideal Brayton eycle and according to the manufaeturing datasheets it has the following specifications: · A pressure ratio of 14. The gas temperature is 300 K at the compressor inlet and 1400 K at the turbine inlet. Mass flow rate of air is 0.783 kg/s Under the assumption of standard air, perform the following: 1. Gas temperature of the compressor and the turbine exits, 2. Back-work ratio 3. Find the power output 4. Compare the power output of the basic Brayton cycle with the power output the best modified Rankine cycle. 5. Compare the final efficiency of basic Brayton cycle with those obtained from Project-1 for modified Rankine cycle. How would you explain that Brayton cycle is more preferred over Rankin cycle in power plant station? 6. For the gas turbine plant described in Task.1, investigate the principles of operation of a gas turbine plant by considering the following: 1. Construct TS and PV diagram 2. Construct simple sketches showing, all the competent for open and closed gas turbine engine 3. Deseribe the operating role of each ecomponent in the engine and main difference between elosed and open gas turbine engine 4. How would a closed gas turbine engine be combined with steam power plant engine. Task.2 Your head of department asked you to make your analysis more realistic by accounting for any discrepancies (i.e., losses, irreversibility/deviations and shortages due to manufacturing misspecification). You decided to refer for the manufacturing datasheet for the gas-turbine cycle in Task.1 to use their suggested efficiency values for the compressor and turbine. The datasheet provided that the compressor efficieney of 82 percent and the turbine efficiency of 86 percent. 1. Compare and evaluate the actual plant and ideal efficiencies, back work ratio and turbine exit 2. What the main limitation associated with turbine in a gas turbine power cyele. 3. How would you enhance the performance of Brayton cycle? Gas turbine operated on Brayton cycle used for electric utility as separated or combined cycles with steam power plant.
