Describe/Define: Commanders use the Operational variable (PMESII-PT) when trying to understand the operational environment. These variables consist of political, military, economic, social, information, infrastructure, physical environment, and time.

Explain/Elaborate: These variables are facets of an effective operational environment. As a commander investigates and analyzes an operational environment, they will take these facets into consideration for their plan of action. Every operation has different components; the PMESII-TT variables allow for the proper understanding and planning of how the decisions made will impact those specific areas. Ensuring the knowledge of these operational variables will help to keep the potential ramifications of the overall operation to a minimum.

Personal Experience: Being stationed with an Aviation Battalion has its ups and downs. One of the pros is the opportunities to do exercises in places outside the United States. We had an exercise in Okinawa, Japan one year. All nine jets were going to be flown from California to Okinawa, Japan. The purpose of this is for the pilots to receive flying hours and experience landing in other countries. For an American aircraft to land in some of the countries, there was a requirement for specific paperwork and clearance. In addition to this, the Battalion Commander (BC) required each aircraft to have a "black box" which contained a laptop, satellite phone, computer, compass, cell phone, and a wifi jet pack. This black box was a backup plan for the pilots in case the aircraft was to go down over any hostile countries, they would not be without a way to be recovered no matter the circumstance. The BC considered the potential operational variables that could have taken place; if the pilots were to go down, they would be stuck on foreign soil. The intent was to ensure that they would be completely prepared if they needed to be. Having a complete understanding of all the potential variables that could possibly arise allowed the BC to plan accordingly for a successful mission.
