Intro a. What's the iceberg principle? 2. Research Design a. What are the distinctions between quantitative and qualitative research? i. Describe types of qualitative data (e.g., in-depth interviews, focus groups) ii. What requirements are there associated with experimental (causal) research)? b. What are the objectives of exploratory vs. descriptive vs. causal research? 3. Scale Development a. What is the difference between Likert, semantic differential, paired- comparison, and constant sum scales? 4. Questionnaires a. In what ways does ordering matter in questionnaires? 5. Sampling a. What is a sampling frame? Give examples. b. Be able to identify which types of sampling are probability sampling and which are non-probability sampling i. Know how each of them work/their characteristics ii. Know whether their methods can be generalized to the defined target population iii. Know whether different types of respondents are fairly represented in the sample iv. E.g., How do you create a judgment sample? Stratified random sample? Come up with examples. c. How do you reduce vs. increase sampling error? Can you reduce non-sampling error in the same way? d. Practice: A local coffee shop wants to determine the average spending at their stores. Spending variance is $30, and the company wants their estimates to be within $2 precision. Assume typical 95% confidence level (1.96). What is the required sample size?
