In January 2010, McNeil Consumer Health Care, a unit of Johnson & Johnson (J&J), recalled lots of Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl, Rolaids, and aspirin in response to consumer complaints about moldy smells emanating from certain products. J&J claimed the odor was a byproduct of a chemical that leaked into the products at a company plant in Puerto Rico. FDA officials met with managers to express serious concerns about their manufacturing operations and then conducted a routine inspection of the firm's Pennsylvania plant. In May, after the FDA accused the company of using raw materials with known bacterial contamination to make certain lots of liquid Tylenol and Motrin for children in Pennsylvania, J&J issued a voluntary recall of those lots.
