Introduction
How many of you have ever seen a movie or read a book where the protagonist is struggling to save the environment from some sort of pollution or exploitation? Although it may seem like a distant problem, the things that happen in those stories are based on very real issues that are happening in the manufacturing world today. I am currently interested in Sustainable Manufacturing and have therefore done a lot of research on the topic according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Today, I want to shed some damaging effects that manufacturing has on the world today, pollution, exploitation, hunger, lack of clean water, and some of the best ways to make it more sustainable.
Body
- The types of unsustainable business practices: pollution, exploitation, hunger, and lack of clean water
- There are many types of pollution that are created by manufacturing, including: "air pollution, water pollution, and land pollution." Air is polluted by the emission of hazardous substances and gases. This can cause respiratory problems, as well as other health problems. ("Air Pollution: Current and Future Challenges | US EPA") Water pollution is created by the release of harmful chemicals and sewage into bodies of water. This can contaminate the water and make it unsafe to drink. ("Water Enforcement | US EPA") Land pollution is created by the dumping of waste on the ground. This can contaminate the soil, and make it difficult for plants and animals to grow. ("Contaminated Land | US EPA")
- Many manufacturing companies exploit their employees by paying them very low wages, and providing them with dangerous working conditions. ("Exploitation." Free Dictionary. Farlex) This can lead to employees working long hours for little pay, and being at risk for serious injuries. In some cases, employees are even forced to work in hazardous conditions without proper safety equipment.
- HungerMany manufacturing companies produce products that are not safe for human consumption. These products can contain harmful chemicals and can make people very sick. In some cases, these products can even be deadly. ("Hunger." World Hunger. N.p., n.d. Web. 17 Apr. 2017. )
- Many manufacturing companies pollute bodies of water, making them unsafe to drink. This can lead to a lack of clean water for people to use and can make them very sick. In some cases, this can even be deadly. ("Effects of the Water Crisis on Health | Water.org")
- Statistical facts of unsustainable business practices
Every year, manufacturing companies release billions of pounds of toxic chemicals into the environment. These chemicals can cause respiratory problems, as well as other health problems. In some cases, these chemicals can even be deadly. Every year, manufacturing companies release billions of pounds of sewage into bodies of water. This can contaminate the water, and make it unsafe to drink. In some cases, this can even be deadly. Every year, manufacturing companies dump billions of pounds of waste on the ground. This can contaminate the soil, and make it difficult for plants and animals to grow. In some cases, this can even be deadly.
B. There are many things that we can do to make the manufacturing world more sustainable. We can start by using less harmful chemicals, and by recycling more. We can also start by using more renewable resources, and by investing in green technology. Finally, we can start by educating people about the importance of sustainability, and by encouraging them to make sustainable choices.
Conclusion
Today, I have shed some light on the damaging effects that manufacturing has on the world, as well as some of the best ways to make Manufacturing more sustainable. It is important for us to be aware of these issues so that we can make the establishment conducive to resource conservation and environmental protection. I encourage you to make sustainable choices and to educate others about the importance of sustainability.
