Question:
Innovation causes many people to confuse innovation with creativity, particularly in the corporate world. This confusion has led to much discussion about the difference between innovation and creativity. Based on much of the research on innovation, as well as its applications in business, the difference between innovation and creativity has been described in the following ways:
- Innovation requires creativity, but creativity is not necessarily innovation. A brainstorming session may produce many new ideas, practices, objects, or process improvements, but these are not innovations unless they have a realizable value (Rickards, 1991; Vehar, 2012).
- Creative thinking is utilized throughout the entire innovation process. Some people assume that creativity is just the start of innovation; however, once an idea is moved along in the innovation process, it is utilized to ensure that it is adopted (Rickards, 1991; Vehar, 2012).
- Innovation is a team sport, while creativity is typically more personal. Throughout the innovation process, collaboration among different units is essential for completing the innovation and moving it toward adoption. As mentioned above, creativity is used throughout the innovation process; it can be enhanced through the team environment (Vehar, 2012).
