It could mean good ethics and values for one person, while for another, it could refer to bookish knowledge. There is a difference between well$-$read and well$-$educated. If you are kind, respectful, helpful and empathetic, you are surely well$-$educated. On the other hand, one may be well$-$read, yet, if their conduct is unbecoming, people around them feel uncomfortable.
