Question:
Is China's reach into Latin America Good or Bad for not only the Latin America nations but also for the United States and the other countries in the Western Hemisphere?
In the early 1800s, the United States created the Monroe Doctrine. This doctrine was created to make sure any foreign power could not come in and colonize or effect a nation in the Western Hemisphere. Please read the doctrine here Monroe Doctrine - https://www.archives.gov/milestone-documents/monroe-doctrine#transcript
In the early 20th Century, Theodore Roosevelt added onto the Monroe Doctrine with his Roosevelt Corollary. This document deals with financial interference with the Latin American countries. Please read the doctrine here Roosevelt Corollary https://www.archives.gov/milestone-documents/roosevelt-corollary
Both of these documents have been very important in the development of the United States and have been invoked in the early 20th century. However, we live in a very different world today. China has touched every corner for the world and now is in Latin America.
Along with the two documents I have asked you to read above, you will also read an article by Margaret Myers "China and Latin America" from Great Decisions. The article is attached below.
