It's not a secret, in fact, it should be one of the main topics that we as human beings should be discussing right now. Our home is suffering and we need to step up and start the right conversations in the right direction forward.

That is why David Attenborough, the man that narrates nature better than anyone, has announced a competition to help heal the earth.

And he wants to hear from you! Attenborough would like to hear the perspective of the youth voicing their opinion, similar to how Greta Thunberg has shared her concern about climate change. This was a powerful movement that began and he wants your generation to carry forward the momentum!

Attenborough believes that we can turn this century around by investing in education, women's rights, and raising people out of poverty so that we can regain our balance with planet earth and help it heal.

This is David Attenborough's message to you:

The plan for our planet is remarkably simple:

Reduce our impact by making sure that everything we do, we can do forever.

I would like to break it down into these 4 overall goals that we can work towards that will create drastic changes for the better.

4 Major Goals:

An Energy Revolution - Phasing out fossil fuels and replacing them with renewables
A Food Revolution - upgrading to efficient food production and reducing meat consumption
Manage the Ocean - restore health of the ocean and respecting natural areas
Rewild the World - keep the wild populations we have and encouraging nature everywhere

I am giving you the opportunity to come up with what YOU believe is your best IDEA that could potentially help solve a specific problem in ONE of these four major categories listed above.

Remember, this is a BIG problem we need to solve which means it will take a CREATIVE thinker. Do not be afraid to think outside of the box but always back it up with REAL scientific data.

Maybe you find an existing product that is helping clean our oceans that we should make more of, or find an area to save where a species is at risk of extinction, or how can every country get a sustainable diet and source of energy to live off of?

Do not try to solve every problem, but pick one problem that you know you can help solve - focus on developing that idea and making that one the best you could possibly make.

I would love for you to submit a 2-3 minute video of you pitching your idea to me! Keep it clear and concise as that is how ideas are best communicated.

Like I said before, get creative and use those Generation Z video editing skills that I know you're using for Tik Tok anyways! Make it however you want - I want to see how your brain thinks!

It could be you speaking on the camera, or maybe a cool whiteboard video or animation or a mini-documentary. Whatever you want as long as it inspires me to want to take action and go with your idea!

The BIG IDEAS for this unit are...

Population growth follows predictable patterns.

The increased consumption of resources and production of waste associated with population growth result in specific stresses that affect Earth's sustainability.

Technological developments can contribute to or help offset the ecological footprint associated with population growth and the consumption of natural resources.

The overall expectations for this unit are...

F1. analyse the relationships between population growth, personal consumption, technological development, and our ecological footprint, and assess the effectiveness of some Canadian initiatives intended to assist expanding populations;

F2. investigate the characteristics of population growth, and use models to calculate the growth of populations within an ecosystem;

F3. demonstrate an understanding of concepts related to population growth, and explain the factors that affect the growth of various populations of species.

REQUIREMENTS THAT MUST BE MET:

make a video that must be within the time frame of 2 and 3 minutes.

You can do it in any format - record it on your phone or using your laptop camera or record your screen or you ca make 4 a video in any software that is available to you online. MUST BE VIDEO.

YOUR TASK:

Pick ONE of the four MAJOR GOALS listed above and decide to research it extensively and come up with what you believe is the best idea that could help with one of these movements.

Your video MUST include the following:

Which ONE of the four goals you are choosing from Attenborough's list
What problem are you solving?
A specific and realistic goal you would like to achieve that solves that problem
A plan on how we will achieve that goal
Why you believe achieving this goal is important
Referencing where you got your credible sources and data through real scientific research and evidence in video
Please include a proper works cited written document along with the video. Should have at least 2 sources.

If you answer these questions successfully and clearly in your video, you will do well on this assignment. Try not to just answer the questions, come up with a creative way to communicate your findings.

David Attenborough will fund your entire project as he has been given 100 billion dollars from the government to put towards this initiative so do not worry about money. But if you want him to give you any money, make sure you try to make your idea achievable, applicable, and something worth investing in.

Be creative, this is a project that you do not have to stress about the details. If you pick of the four major goals, include the seven must-haves and make a video and share an idea that you would be proud to share with the world you will do great. Make a video that you would want to upload to Instagram or Tik Tok because you actually believe that it will help save the world!

Think about Tik Tok as a free video editing app. You can create 2-3 one-minute long videos and put them together on any free video editing software on your computer. Some advantages to using Tik Tok would be effects, clipping, masking, captions, creativity, and feel free to make it fun or funny! I suggest playing to your strengths for your final summative, as this is just an option!
