Question:
Joe is a 4th grade student, and his teacher is worried about him because he is having difficulty working at grade level in reading, as well as with the reading in social studies and science. The district screener assessment, NWEA MAP, also shows Joe performing lower than the other students in his class in reading. Joe's teacher decides to administer some diagnostic assessments to learn more about Joe's literacy skills. For each assessment:
- Interpret the data. What does Joe do well? What does Joe need work in?
- List one instructional activity you could use with Joe to help develop his literacy skills based on the focus skill listed for each assessment. You can use the If-Then chart from the lecture notes, the instructional activities included in each chapter of Assessment for Reading Instruction, or other evidence-based resources you may know about, such as the Reading Rockets website.
