Jones et al. (2023) examined the effect of distraction on the ability to complete a complex task. James et al. (2023) used different types of distractions and measured the number of 2 digit multiplication (e.g., 19 X 14 = ?) problems (the complex task) participants could correctly completed in 2 minutes. While completing math problems, participants will be in a room with: (1) the latest Hollywood, blockbuster movie playing on a TV screen, (2) soothing music is playing over speakers in the room, and (3) the sound of a baby crying over the speakers in the room. Because math ability can vary person to person, each person in the study will be tested under each condition (e.g., math while the movie plays, then math while soothing music plays, and followed by math with baby crying).
