Waste (Muda) (Lean Production Simplified) Discussion Topics
Lean thinking and lean systems are about "maximizing customer (client, patient, patron, etc.) value with the minimum required resources". It is not about doing more with less or eliminating people. It is about identifying and eliminating Waste (Muda) (you will learn the specifics), reducing or eliminating variation (Mura), reducing or eliminating overburden(Muri) and increasing the value-added content of any type of work.
As you answer the questions below, integrate your experience with your 5S project into your discussion. Your discussion should not be limited to just your 5S project, in fact you need to explain Waste beyond your 5S project. However, the 5S project should be helping understand Waste both within your process chosen for the 5S process and other areas in your life and work where Waste exists (and it exists everywhere).
1. List and explain the eight types of Waste (Muda) in your own words.
2. Examine the process you chose chose for you 5S project for Waste (Muda). What types do you see and where (the process step(s)?
3. Do you see Mura (Unevenness)? Where?
4. Do you see or experience Muri(Overburden)? Where?
5. Think about other aspects of your work or home life. Where else do you see these Wastes?
