Question:
- "Missy Franklin Wants to Swim in College, Put Off Endorsement Fortunes"
- How is amateurism framed and presented in the article and video?
- Do you believe such framing is warranted?
1) Amateurism is framed in a humbling and realistic manner. Missy exemplifies the amateur image in life because she is more focused on receiving her education, living a life within her budget and dreams, and continuing the sport for fun, and not fame. She is at peace with her decision and rather than being upset, she is happy. Normally, in the current generation, amateurism is looked at as the dumb option and as accepting struggle, when it is a fully thought out process for self growth and patience.
2) I defiantly believe that such framing is warranted and manipulative. I feel the climate in the world is very emotional and picky, and more than anything, judgmental. I think professional sports are looked at in glamorous light, and athletes who are apart of this small and elite group are given the freedoms to get away with certain unrealistic aspects of life. For example, Gabby Douglas being looked at as Americas sweetheart and being paraded around by the media and cereal boxes. This is the only image society sees as successful and happiness, however, Missy boldly redefines the norms and it is extremely warranted because her message is impactful, humbling, and powerful. Plus, the mindset is just refreshing to experience in a weak-minded society that social media has created.
