Question:
Part 6 - Unionization in 2022Each day we seem to be hearing more and more about unionization attempts at Amazon, Starbucks, Target, and Apple. We haven't had much news about employee unions once we became an information-age/knowledge-based/service economy.Provide answers to the following two questions - Use the Internet to research current unionization actions. What is happening to cause this recent push for employees to vote unions into their workplaces? What can management in organizations do to eliminate unionization in their workplaces? What role does HR play when unions are involved in a firm? How can HR work to best meet employee AND management needs when sometimes these needs are in conflict with each other?
The Washington Post had an article on 01/19/2023 that reported union membership hit a record low in 2022 despite the significant union/labor victories at Starbucks and Amazon. The US labor movement couldn't keep up with the booming job market we experienced in 2021-2022, which we all know added 5M jobs - and it was non-union jobs that were growing at a faster clip than union positions. It will be very interesting to watch this labor/union movement in 2023 as we begin this year hearing the words "layoffs" and "recession".
