Question:
Per my response in the Leadership Toolkit assignment, I believe that the leadership skills and behaviors identified align with the employee satisfaction survey. The suggested leadership skills and behaviors that I recommended improvement on were based on the questions I saw where there was a significant decrease in the responses over the four years of the survey. I made those questions the target of what I felt needed to be addressed regarding the company structure and leadership for better success and responses in future surveys. The questions I based my recommendations on were;
- My company cares about its employees.
- My job makes good use of my skills and abilities
- I am delighted with my job
- My supervisor shows appreciation for the work that I do
- I trust my supervisor
- Recognizes employees based on merit, i.e., accomplishments successes
- My work gives me a sense of personal accomplishment
Developing better relationships with employees and communicating visions and expectations will show the employees that the company and supervisors do care about them. Communicating expectations and values also allows both leaders and employees to be on the same page about what is expected from both parties and is a step forward to building trusting relationships. Employee recognition also declined continuously on the survey which is why I suggested acknowledging employees and showing appreciation through luncheons or employee appreciation outings. I also suggested end-of-the-year bonuses. Doing so would show employees that the company has taken their responses to the survey seriously and is willing to put action to show their appreciation which will ultimately increase the responses in the following surveys.
The job satisfaction portion of the survey also had questions that significantly decreased over four years. To address those questions I proposed the company and supervisors take the actions listed above and reevaluate each employee to determine if they are in a position where they can thrive and show their best attributes for success and fulfillment in the workplace. Many employee responses showed that they were not happy or satisfied with their job and that the use of their skills was not put to good use. As supervisors and leaders, it is our duty to make sure that the company is utilizing its employees and their greatest assets for greater results. If we do that then employees will feel accomplished with their work and job satisfaction will increase.
Improvement in these leadership skills and focus areas will increase the responses in the areas where they significantly decreased because employees will see that the company targeted the areas of greatest concern for the employees. I believe this will create a reverse domino effect where other areas may also increase due to the change in actions. If these leadership skills are addressed in the manners suggested then working conditions will also increase in the areas where they decreased such as trusting their supervisors and transparency between the two.
Consider the following during the ongoing discussion:
Are you actively listening to the feedback from your peers, remaining open to modifying the leadershipskills and behaviorsyou have identified based on their comments and input?
Compare and contrastskills and behaviorsselected by your peers with those you have selected. As you review their rationale that justifies their selections, please provide feedback to your peers on additional points they should consider.
Provide your rationale for keepingtheskills and behaviorsyou have selected that your fellow peer(s) have not, explaining why you believe the competencies you have selected provide better opportunity for organizational improvement. If, however, you believe another learner'sskills and behavior selection is more viable then your own, then provide the rationale for changing your initial selection to one recommended by another learner.
