The DNP program originated in response to the need for advanced training facing a dynamic healthcare system (Rosenfeld et al., 2022). The curriculum for the DNP is designed to expand upon master\'s degree coursework by focusing on areas like evidence-based practice, system leadership, and quality improvement. DNP professionals can manage and provide direct patient care, develop and implement healthcare policies, and take administrative roles in healthcare facilities. Compared to a research-focused Ph.D. program, the DNP program ensures that healthcare providers achieve the highest levels of clinical leadership and administration (Rivaz et al., 2021). Current State of DNP The DNP is the pinnacle program for nurses, indicating that it represents the discipline\'s most significant level of study. According to AACN, currently, there are 407 DNP programs in operation at schools of nursing across the country, with an additional 106 DNP programs in the planning stages, including 49 post-bachelor\'s and 47 post-master\'s programs (AACN, 2022). A DNP degree can be earned in all 50 states. In 2021, 280 institutions offered DNP programs for students with a bachelor\'s degree or higher, 381 institutions offered DNP programs for those with a master\'s degree, and eight institutions offered DNP programs for students seeking licensure (AACN, 2022). According to the 2022 statistics, students enrolled in DNP programs rose from 39,530 in 2020 to 40,834 in 2021, while DNP conferrals rose from 9,158 in the same time frame to 10,086 (AACN, 2022). Future State of DNP To understand how the DNP program is evolving and its future, it is significant to understand its impact on society. DNP programs have been turning out a substantial number of qualified graduates who are prepared to enter the competitive advanced nursing employment market, which may be the answer to future healthcare provider shortages. Most nurses with DNP certification are the present clinical managers, educators, administrators, and nursing practitioners, impacting healthcare delivery and outcomes (Carpenter, Waldrop & Carter-Templeton, 2021). However, increases in the number of graduates are not being matched by increases in the number of students enrolling in advanced practice nursing programs, leading to a shortage of these advanced professionals in the future (Hooshmand et al., 2019). Therefore, AACN is committed to working with clinicians, policymakers, academic leaders, and inter-professional colleagues to develop the DNP program as public health need change (Bergren, 2022). AACN recommends that academic nursing programs place a premium on leadership development for their students to better prepare them for the future workforce (AACN, 2022). Besides, as nurses roles continue to grow and become complex, the healthcare system must be integrated with new technologies. The role of technology in healthcare delivery has grown exponentially, and this must be understood as electronic health records have become an integral part of healthcare delivery. The adoption of technology brings other issues into play, such as privacy. Technological advancement will have in the future of nursing and must be incorporated to ensure healthcare delivery is economical and practical. Transformative Healthcare DNP-prepared nurses play a pivotal role when it comes to transformative healthcare and solving complex issues in healthcare. The DNP program ensures that nurses can translate theoretical knowledge into nursing practices. There is an increasing need for practitioners in clinical healthcare, but more is needed to meet that demand. APNs with a doctorate can help bridge this gap in the healthcare system (Bergren, 2022). One of the ways that DNP healthcare providers develop a culture of safety in healthcare facilities is by adopting technology and implementing evidence-based practice (Rivaz et al., 2021). Most importantly, DNP nurses can develop, adopt, and test healthcare models to suit the needs of patients (Milner et al., 2019). Additionally, healthcare providers from this program are trained to develop leadership skills, which is essential in healthcare delivery and quality improvement. Advantage of DNP One of the program\'s advantages is the leadership skills it provides. The DNP is a well-rounded program focusing more on the technical aspect of nursing and its students\' leadership skills (Grace, 2018). The benefits of a DNP degree include the ability to establish clinical excellence, improve practice settings, and innovate new methods of providing care. As the present APRN function and patient population focus continue to grow, it is projected that the benefits of earning a DNP degree, as advocated for by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), will increase (Smart & Curry, 2022). Unlike conventional programs, the DNP program also offers an online program tailored to fit around the busy schedule of nurses giving them the flexibility they need as they continue offering their services while learning (Milner et al., 2019). Besides the exceptional skills one gains, another advantage is associated with the high compensation for DNP nurses, which is continually rising compared to MSN nurses\'. Moreover, the DNP program ensures that one stays current with emerging trends and technology in their field of expertise; this is essential in having a greater understanding of diseases. Conclusion The DNP program is essential in nursing practices and has a huge role to play in the future, and this is inclusive of the leadership skills the program instills in its students. The DNP program has evolved in the last two decades; albeit not being adopted as an entry point for advanced nursing practice, it has seen massive adoption within the nursing profession.
