use the graphs below to answer the questions:
Here is my project and context to the graphs:
AP Statistics Project
Purpose: The purpose of this project is for you to actually do statistics. You are to formulate a statistical question, design a study or experiment to answer the question, conduct the study or experiment, collect the data, analyze the data, and use statistical inference to answer the question. You are going to do it all!
- Your statistical question
Does the attendance at Golden State Warriors away games and the strength of their opponents influence the point differential?
- Your response variable(s) of interest - what are you trying to estimate? Your explanatory variable - what is causing a change in outcomes to your response variable? (if applicable)
Response:Point differential of the Warriors NBA game
Explanatory:Amount of attendance at the Warriors NBA away game.
Control Variable:Team strength of the opposing teams. (by their rankings that season)
- Will you be conducting an experiment or taking a random sample to conduct an observational study
- If you are doing anobservational study, you must take a random sample from your population of interest. You need to include:
- Your population(s)
- If you are doing anobservational study, you must take a random sample from your population of interest. You need to include:
Attendees at Warriors NBA away games over the past 10 seasons.
Null Hypothesis (H0): The amount of attendance and the ranking of opposing teams at Warriors NBA away gamesdoes not affect the point differential of the game.
Alternative Hypothesis (Ha): The amount of attendanceand the ranking of opposing teams at Warriors NBA away gamesdoes affect the point differential of the game.
- What tests/intervals you will use to analyze your data
I will conduct a regression analysis with attendance as the independent variable and point differential as the dependent variable.
control:
- strength of the opposing team (ranking)
what question you are trying to answer:
Does attendance at Golden State Warriors away games and the strength of their opponents (opponent ranking) influence the point differential?
- Attendance: Does having a larger crowd at away games impact the Warriors' performance?
- Opponent Strength: Does the ranking of the Warriors' opponent affect the point differential?
Higher opponent ranking: Represents a stronger team (opponent)
Lower opponent ranking: Represents a weaker team (opponent)
how I will analyze my data:
I will use amultiple regression analysis.
How it works:
- Dependent Variable: Point Differential (difference between Warriors score and opponent's score)
- Independent Variables:
- Attendance (number of fans at the Warriors' away game)
- Opponent Strength (By their ending rank each season) [also the control]
The regression analysis will show if changes in attendance and opponent ranking are associated with changes in point differential.
The regression analysis will estimate two coefficients:
- Coefficient for Attendance: This value tells you how much, on average, the point differential is expected to change for every one-unit increase in attendance (e.g., for every additional 1,000 fans).
- A positive coefficient would mean that a larger crowd is associated with a higher point differential (Warriors win by more points).
- A negative coefficient would mean that a larger crowd is associated with a lower point differential
- Coefficient for Opponent Ranking: This value tells you how much, on average, the point differential is expected to change for every one-unit decrease in opponent ranking (remember, lower ranking means a stronger opponent).
- A negative coefficient would mean that playing a stronger opponent (lower ranking) leads to a lower point differential (Warriors win by a smaller margin or could lose).
- A positive coefficient would mean that playing a weaker opponent (higher ranking) might lead to the Warriors slacking off a bit, resulting in a smaller win margin.
Graphs, summary statistics, and raw data (Make sure your graphs are well labeled, easy to compare, and help answer the question of interest. You should include a brief discussion of the graphs and interpretations of the summary statistics).
Analysis (Include all elements of PHANTOMS and/or PANIC).
Conclusion (Discuss your conclusion and any possible errors or limitations to your conclusion, what you could do to improve the study in the future, etc.)
