The burden of going with candidate 1 is that he will appear the same as the other employees in the eyes of the workforce. The advantage of going with candidate 1 is that he has proven with his other company that the potential to be a top performer is there. The advantage of going with candidate 2 is that the appearance of the workforce is not only changing but picking a candidate with a passion for the business and who is more technologically savvy. The disadvantage with candidate 2 is that he might need to be more focused on the technical side and might not produce big sales numbers like the other two candidates. The advantage of going with candidate 3 is that she appears very hungry and does not take no for an answer. The only disadvantage of going with candidate 3 is that she needs to have experience in the 3D printer sales area specifically.
I view a moral issue resolved by not going with the middle-aged white male candidate for several reasons. Although he was a top performer in his last company, sales have started to plateau, and the rest of the staff currently with the company are also middle-aged white males, which does not show that the company has a very diverse workforce. Being involved in who is to be the top performer's replacement, not only acknowledging that the force needs to appear more varied but also the positive impacts of different ideas and views by going with an employee of a different culture can reflect positively in the eyes of the customer.
The Utilitarian analysis method would be the best solution to this dilemma. Not looking at the candidate that will potentially bring the most revenue, in turn, focusing on changing the appearance of the current workforce, shows that the company is looking to grow past predominantly middle-aged white males. There is no magical formula when picking a new candidate for a position. Still, it is improbable that the company will see a different result by sticking with the same behaviors.
Ultimately the best hire to be chosen is candidate 3, and that is because she has shown hunger, and regardless of prior background, someone that is driven to succeed will thrive in almost any sales position. She also would indicate that the company is evolving and reaching for a more diverse workplace.
