Question:
PLEASE READ FROM THE BEGINNING CAREFULLY-
I used chegg to get help and they found out as chegg is very common. SolutionInn is a better option. They found out that i took help in the maths midtems on 13th April and 25th March. I have sent a letter to the Dean about the issue. The following is what I sent to him.
Respected Dean,
This is with respect to my case in which I have been accused of plagiarism. I have been accused of taking help from online platforms for my mid terms. I am completely cognizant of the fact that what I have done is against the code of conduct of the institute and completely unacceptable. However, I would like to present you my case and would like you to brief on the circumstances surrounding me due to which I ended up taking this action.
Owing to Covid 19 pandemic, in person classes were suspended from the start of March. That basically meant that no classes were held and students had to learn all alone and remotely which was not quite convenient and presented a lot of hurdles. Unfortunately this university did not take any initiative to start live online classes like other universities did. If our university had also started these online classes then me and other students can learn their topics more conveniently and thoroughly. Moreover it would have given us the opportunity to ask questions if we had and and through out we would have been able to get an answer to our queries and would be able to get our concepts clarified. But this didn't happen at our university and we were not facilitated through online live classes. We were just given some limited PDF files and some website links to prepare for our exam which were not sufficient at all. As a result i was having problems to learn calculus after the shutdown. Moreover, by the end of March, I had a very high fever and i was sick for about a week. I took all the exams including other courses while I was under treatment and was laying in my bed. I managed to take the other courses using my phone where I just typed in and submitted the paper, but for calculus I had to do the Maths, which was not totally possible taking into account my deteriorating health condition. Moreover, please also consider that I had never studied Calculus in my life but it was a pre-requisite for computer science studies so I couldnt skip the exam. Furthermore, there were no online class system and calculus is not a subject where its possible to learn all alone without interacting with a teacher. Furthermore, owing to covid 19 and for staying home for prolong period of time I got very sick which was also a big difficulty to learn calculus
1) Classes suspended as a result learning calculus all alone staying home was near impossible as i never took calculus in my life and i had to take it because its a requirement for computer science studies
2) There was no online class system and calculus is not a subject where its possible to learn all alone without interacting with a teacher
3) Due to covid 19 and for staying home for prolong period of time I got very sick which was also a big difficulty to learn calculus
Because of this I found no other way to complete my mid term expect for getting assistance from these online platforms. I therefore request for some sympathy and dont mark my exam as zero. I assure you that I will never attempt such action again in future.
As this year was different because of the pandemic that has shaken the world, I request you to kindly sympathize with me and not take a drastic action. I am extremely ashamed for what I did and I request you for some leniency. I would be highly obliged.
Regards,
The dean then replied with the following email-
In my capacity as Academic Integrity Officer (AIO), I recently received the attached report of academic misconduct, a copy of which you have also received.
Because there is a record on file of a previous report of academic misconduct (February 27, 2020, MATH 1111, Winter 2020, Section a and d), in accordance with academic regulation 10.6.3 g), the AIO may impose additional sanctions.
In the first case, you did not contest the allegation or the academic penalties imposed by the instructors. In the second case you requested a meeting with the undersigned and the instructor. The meeting took place on Thursday, April 30, 2020 at 3:00 pm via MS Teams. Having carefully considered all aspects of the case presented by both parties, I have decided to uphold the penalty imposed by the instructor. In such cases, it is a matter for the AIO to determine what, if any additional sanctions should be imposed.
As is the norm in cases such as this, I have determined that additional sanctions should be imposed as follows:
· Placement on Disciplinary Probation effective immediately for one year, until the end of the [2021 Winter] term.
· A notation of Disciplinary Probation will be recorded on your transcript. You may apply to have the disciplinary notation removed one year after expiry of the sanction (i.e. at the end of the [2021 Winter] term) by sending an email request to the Registrar at registrar@mta.ca.
· In the meantime, if you are implicated in any other reports of academic misconduct at any time during the remainder of your academic career at Mount Allison, the case may be referred to the Academic Integrity Committee and if found guilty, additional and likely more severe sanctions such as disciplinary suspension, dismissal, or expulsion may be imposed.
You have the right to appeal this decision. An appeal of this decision must be in writing, specifying the basis of your appeal, outlined below. The appeal must be addressed to Dr. Jeff Ollerhead in his capacity as designated Chair of the Academic Appeals Committee. The letter of appeal, addressed to Dr. Ollerhead and marked “Confidential” may be sent via email attachment to provost@mta.ca or by fax to 506-364-2299, by 4:30 pm, Wednesday, May 06, 2020.
Appeals will be considered on the following grounds:
the AIO had no right to make the decision;
the AIO was biased;
the AIO did not allow an opportunity to respond to all the aspects of the case;
since the initial decision, new facts have come to light which are relevant (new facts must be documented within the appeal request);
the AIO’s decision was patently unreasonable (the basis of which must be included in the appeal request);
the AIO made an error in interpreting a regulation (such error must be outlined in the request for appeal);
the severity of the sanction was not appropriate.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions concerning this matter.
Sincerely,
NOW I WANT TO APPEAL TO THE CHAIRMAN. WHATEVER HAPPENS DOESNT MATTER. I JUST DONT WANT IT TO APPEAR ON MY TRANSCRIPT.
PLEASE WRITE AN APPEAL THAT I CAN SEND TO THE CHAIRMAN OF ACADEMIC APPEALS COMITTE THAT WILL ALLOW HIM NOT TO MENTION IT ON THE TRANSCRIPT.
