Please write a 3-4 page paper in which you analyze a speech that you saw. My preference under normal conditions is that you see the speech live, in person. Of course seeing a speech live is much different than seeing a speech on a computer. Given our current situation, please just find a speech online and check it out. Check Toastmasters Speeches, or Tedtalks for possibilities You can write your paper on a speech that you see online. Just recognize that it is not nearly the same as seeing a speech in person. What makes a speech effective? Writing on the function of criticism, Jon Ericson writes that "The critic observes public speaking in order to make useful generalizations about it. The critic observes, analyzes, describes, and then evaluates." For this assignment, you get to be a critic. That does not mean to be all negative. It means to make a judgement and give reasons for your judgement. Was the speech an effective speech? Why or why not? Make a judgement about the speech, and tell why you think what you think. Point out specific parts of the speech that were significant. They might be significant because they are there, or they may be significantly missing. Include four parts to your paper: Situation Summary Strengths Weaknesses Write enough about each aspect to demonstrate your understanding of what makes a speech effective. Content and organization are part of a speech. Write cleanly. Edit your paper for content and style. Consider the ideas presented. See also the page in Modules about the Rhetorical Analysis paper.
