Q.1. Answer the following questions [10M: 4+3+3] a) A common method for classification of different computer system ISA is by their architectural complexity. A Complex Instruction Set Computer (or CISC) has many specialized instructions, some of which may only be rarely used in practical programs. However, it enables more performance efficient implementation of even the rarely used instructions. On the other hand, a Reduced Instruction Set Computer (or RISC) simplifies the computer's control and processing unit by efficiently implementing only the instructions that are frequently used in programs. The less common operations are implemented as programmatic subroutines, which may not be written/programmed/coded in an efficient manner from performance perspective. Given this method of ISA classification, how would you classify the ISA of an LC-3 computer? Does it resemble a CISC ISA or a RISC ISA? Provide sufficient justification for your answer. b) As part of the Staff Graded Assignment, students were asked to perform 2's complement subtraction A - B where A and B are 8-bit numbers. The solution provided by one of the students is as follows. A B 11100111 11011101 A-B 10001010 Answer the following questions: i. What is the decimal equivalent of the number A? ii. Is the obtained result correct? If it is correct, then provide its decimal equivalent number. If the answer is incorrect, provide the correct answer along with its decimal equivalent. Note: Show all necessary steps to justify your answer in (i) and (ii). Marks will not be awarded for answers without justification. c) The Boolean Equation Y = A'BC + A'BC' + AB'C' + AB'C + ABB is to be implemented using only two input NOR gates. What is the minimum number of NOR gates required? Justify your answer. Marks will not be awarded for answer without justification. Q.1.
