Question 2 65 kNm Level 1 Level 0 25 kNm 250 x 650 mm Span-6m 2 375 mm 3800 mm 250 x 650 mm Span-6 m 250 x 650 mm Span= 6 m 375 mm 250 x 650 mm. Span-6 m All dimensions are in mm Figure Q2 65 kNm 25 kNm Top face of pile cap A corner column in a reinforced concrete building is shown in Figure Q2. Lateral action on the building is carried by lift shear wall (braced). All beams framing into the column have a cross-section of 250 x 650 mm and a span of 6.0 m in both directions. A cross section of 375 x 375 mm is proposed for the column which has an actual height of 3.8 m. Under the critical conditions of action on the beam, the ultimate bending moments about both axes of the column are 65 kNm at Level 1 and 25 kNm at Ground Level as shown in the figure. The ultimate axial action (including self-weight of the column) is 2500 kN. (a) Determine the effective heights and the slenderness ratios of the column and show that it should be designed as non-slender column. (6 marks) (b) Design all reinforcement required in the column using Grade C30/37 concrete, Grade 500 and Grade 250 steel for the main bars and links respectively, and a cover to the main bars of 40mm. (15 marks) (c) Show in neat dimensioned sketches the arrangement of the main reinforcement and links (both longitudinal and cross-sections). Label the detailing properly. (4 marks)
