Research suggests many incarcerated women suffer for adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), e.g., abuse, neglect, and chaotic home
Question:
Research suggests many incarcerated women suffer for adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), e.g., abuse, neglect, and chaotic home environments, and adult intimate partner violence (IPV). A sample of N = 10 incarcerated women were surveyed to determine if there was a relationship between ACEs and IPV. Specifically, the following 10 ACEs were examined:
Physical Neglect | Incarcerated Family Member |
Emotional Neglect | Mother Battered |
Emotional Abuse | Parental Separation and/or Divorce |
Physical Abuse | Lived with Someone with a Mental Illness |
Sexual Abuse | Lived with Someone with a Substance Abuse Problem |
The variables were treated as dichotomous and coded 1 if the respondent reported “yes” to experiencing the ACE. A composite score was formed ranging from 0 – 10. IPV was measured with an 18 item self-report measure asking participants if they had experienced physical, sexual, and psychological abuse in their most recent intimate partner relationship prior to incarceration. Responses ranged from 0 – 18 with higher scores reflecting a higher frequency of IPV.
The data is presented below:
ACEs: | 3 | 5 | 8 | 10 | 10 | 9 | 6 | 7 | 2 | 4 |
IPV: | 2 | 5 | 12 | 16 | 15 | 14 | 8 | 6 | 4 | 3 |
Disclaimer: The example scenario was modeled after the following article: Jones, Worthen, Sharp, & McLeod (2018). Life as she knows it: The effects of adverse childhood experiences in intimate partner violence among women prisoners. Child Abuse and Neglect, 85, 68-79.
Part II:
- Use the data to analyze a simple regression model in Excel that regresses IPV on ACEs. Please report the prediction model (i.e., least square regression line) below.
- If a female prisoner reported an ACE score of 7, what is their predicted IPV score?
- Test the hypothesis that the slope is equal to zero, i.e., is there a statistically significant relationship of experienced IPV to ACEs? You may copy/paste the output below or write-out your answer.
- Briefly report the results in scientific format. Please be sure to interpret the slope and intercept in the context of the problem.
