Respond to the post of the below of my colleagues in one of the following ways: Offer an alternative view of how personal culture can affect communication with others. As an African American female living in the south, I have experienced stereotypes and unconscious and conscious bias almost every day. The culture I grew up in the country part of the inner city. My living environment is majority are relatives which are all African Americans. The stereotypes I come across is that we are treated like we are in a lack of a better phrase is ghetto. Which is a quarter of a city in which members of a minority group live especially because of social, legal, or economic pressure, an isolated group, a situation that resembles a ghetto especially in conferring inferior status or limiting opportunity. (Merriam Webster, n.d.). When I go in stores, I have encountered people of other backgrounds using certain slang words when trying to communicate with me, touching my hair, or asking how do I put that hair in my head? Another stereotype is that we are loud, lazy and African American women are bitter. I have actually had someone tell me that they would not date or marry an African American woman because they were too loud and angry. They did not care to get to know one based off the stereotype they heard about. I have been judged based on the skin tone by other ethnicities and in my own race. The area I lived in, the lighter your skin the prettier you were. I know at one point I consider bleaching my skin so I would be considered beautiful. According to Credo for Ethical communication, we promote communication climates of caring and mutual understanding that respect the unique needs and characteristics of individual communicators. (National Communication Association, 2017). I feel that this statement is supporting individual. communication that isn't based on discrimination, or bias. I took this as if they were devoted to respecting everyone individually. As a person in the customer service industry, it's important not to judge others based on their mannerisms, or accent. It can be tricky when you are communicating with via phone. There are male and female voices that sound similar.
