Maintaining Our Vital Natural Resources Earth's natural resources - fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas, plus our water, wood, and metals – are being used up at an alarming rate. If these things run out, the consequences for us all will be huge; everything about human life on Earth will have to change. Thankfully, there are now small signs that people and governments are finally waking up to this problem. Hopefully, humans will now start trying to better manage the world's resources. If they don't, of course, then there just won't be any resources left for humans to plunder. One immediate way to improve the situation is to encourage everyone to 'reduce, reuse, recycle'. First, we must all learn to use fewer natural resources every day. We can start by reducing the number of electrical items we leave plugged in, using less water, and avoiding motorized transportation. Many cities are introducing carbon emissions taxes, which is a step in the right direction. In our homes, we can use only energy-saving light bulbs and install water meters. Parents need to teach young children to turn off lights that they are not using. Unfortunately, it is difficult to persuade people to change; it will be difficult to get them to use less energy, use less water, and eat less food. We therefore need to give them an economic incentive to change their behavior. In other words, we need to make electricity, water, food, and gasoline much more expensive. Making things cost more will motivate people to stop wasting resources. Next, we have to start restoring old, unwanted objects to a state in which they can be used again. Glass bottles can be cleaned and reused without having to be broken and remade. Reusing things is a very efficient process and consumes less energy than recycling. It does, however, often need a lot of expensive organization and administration. There are also concerns to be faced regarding reused medical equipment and food-storage items, for example, because of safety and hygiene issues. Despite these problems, the benefits of reusing items should be clear to everyone, so we need to start doing more of it. Finally, we need to do far more recycling than we are currently doing. We all know that materials such as paper and plastic can be recycled into new products. This process uses less energy and emits fewer greenhouse gases than making new articles from raw materials. Yes, sorting through used materials before recycling them is a boring, time-consuming, difficult, and even dirty job. Breaking up electronic equipment to recycle rare metals is also potentially dangerous. But, as long as we understand the dangers involved, the necessity for all of us in every neighborhood in every city to do more recycling is obvious. Urgent action is required now in order to avoid a catastrophic depletion of the planet's vital natural resources, and the 'reduce, reuse, recycle' strategy seems to be a manageable one for every human. People may be resistant to the idea of changing their ways or increasing the cost of life by 'going green', but it is crucial that we do this for the future of the planet. We have lived the wrong way for far too long. I have been saying this for years and years, but of course nobody listens, nobody cares. Well, guess what people? The moment when you will have to start listening and caring is much closer than you think! Good luck with all the changes that are coming your way; you have brought all this upon yourself with your selfish, wasteful living! Don't say I didn't warn you.
