Face It, It\'s Over

Supervisor Information: One of your subordinates, a young woman, has just complained to you about another worker who also reports to you. She reported that he had grabbed her behind some packing boxes and tried to kiss her. She and he had previously dated but had parted over a year ago and since then she has become engaged to someone else. She has made it very clear that she wants no personal relationship beyond work. She says he won\'t accept that and that she expects you to make sure he treats her with respect. You are very aware of their former relationship and you are also aware that he was very unhappy when they broke up. He has not dates since. You have asked him to come to speak with you.

Subordinate information: Your supervisor has just asked to speak with you. You aren\'t sure but you think it is about your former let friend since you just saw her leave the supervisor\'s office. (You both work for the same company under the same supervisor.) You did a stupid thing this morning. You ran into her accidentally in a packing area and decided on the spur of the moment to take advantage of the privacy. You grabbed her and tried to kiss her. She pulled away and left, telling you in no uncertain terms what she thought of you. The two of you split up over a year ago and she is now engaged to someone else. You know that her new relationship is a mistake and you really want her to give you another chance. It was not the best approach to take, you realize. You hope your supervisor stays out of the situation because it is none of his business.

Case 3

Time is Money

Supervisor Information: You have decided to speak to one of your subordinates about her loose interpretation of the work schedule. This person has been arriving a few minutes late all week and leaving a few minutes early each shift. Normally you don\'t even watch out for the exact moment your staff start and stop, they are reliable good workers. There has not been a problem recently with any of them. But one of the other workers made a comment about how this particular subordinate must be getting promoted to management because she seems to set her own clock. So you watched more closely and indeed this subordinate is taking advantage and working close to half an hour less than she should be. It is setting a bad example and needs to stop. This person is normally one of your best workers. You don\'t know this person well because she is a very quiet, private person.

Subordinate Information: Your supervisor has asked to speak with you. You hope it is not a problem because you have enough to deal with these days. One of your children is very sick and although your mother is staying at your home to help out, you are very concerned about your child and you know it is really too much for your mother. Plus, you have to take your child to various specialist appointments and your mother cannot drive. So you have been cutting time at work, coming in a little late and leaving a little early. You don\'t feel guilty because you have been taking a short lunch to make up some of the time. Plus, you have always been a very reliable worker. This is only a temporary problem, you hope. You are not keen on discussing this matter with your supervisor as you consider it is a private affair. It is up to you how much you will reveal.

Case 4

No, It\'s Not Private

Supervisor Information: You have just received some interesting information from a computer consultant who was hired by the company to set up some new policies and practices linked to the new programs. As part of his job, he does occasional audits of computer use by company personnel. He came to you to show you how one of your subordinates has been using his e-mail. This subordinate has been receiving and sending pornographic material, as well as receiving and sending a variety of jokes, some fairly mild, some seriously inappropriate. At the moment there is no policy regarding using email for personal use. Regardless, this is certainly using company property and time in unacceptable ways. You are shocked at this and you must deal with the situation immediately. You have called the employee to your office.
