The Controller Area Network is used to enable the exchange of information between systems (or nodes) in modern motor vehicles. Consider the example Controller Area Network (CAN) shown in the figure below. CANH CANL A Tx Rx Tx Rx Tx Y Rx Node 1 (ECU) Node 2 (ESP) Node 3 Figure 1 - Example Controller Area Network. The Engine Control Unit (ECU; Node 1) broadcasts engine speed (RPM) as a 16-bit unsigned integer on the CAN bus with the standard CAN identifier 0x41C. Write out the sequence of bits (0 = dominant, 1 = recessive) seen on the bus in the arbitration field of the CAN frame transmitted by the ECU.
