The topic of your Journal entry this week is plagiarism. Read the following scenarios and discuss what you would do in each case.
Scenarios:
- Jill was assigned a project in her human services class this term. Her friend Jose had the same class last term. The project Jill has this term is very similar to Juan's project last term. Jill reads Jose's paper and talks with him about the assignment. When it comes time to write the paper, Jill does not copy and paste from Jose's paper, but does use many of his ideas. Is this a case for plagiarism? Why or why not?
- As a hobby, Brittany keeps a blog on poetry. Some of the poems are her original work, but the majority of the poems are from other authors. She does include the URL to the original poems. On her resume, she lists "Poetry Blog Writer" as her occupation. Is this ethical to do so? Why or why not?
- In a group dynamics course, three students work in a small group on a project. One of the students uses the project for another course at a different school. Is this considered plagiarism? If you were the individual who did not give authorization to use the project what would you do?
- Monique has an interest in pursuing a degree in early childhood education. In her degree program, an algebra class is required. She is a straight-A student but has always struggled with math. Despite going to the math center for tutoring assistance, Monique cannot seem to understand the homework in Unit 3. She searches online and finds answers to the algebra problems and uses the solutions in her homework. Is this ethical for Monique to do? If you were placed in a similar situation where you were struggling with a course, what would you do?
