Question:
This writer likes the way you describe the technicalities and symptoms of a midlife crisis. This writer would like to focus on the idea of the people experiencing this coming to the realization of their own mortality. As you mention, people start to realize their life is half over, and used to be an open book full of possibilities becomes something in which the end becomes palpable. This realization can cause people to review the life they've lived and determine that they have not done enough, which as you mention, can cause them to make substantial adjustments, and in some cases, behave more drastically (Freund & Ritter, 2009). The combination of not feelin fulfilled and believing that time has become substantially limited has the potential to expand a person's sense of inhibitions and increase the chance of taking risks to feel a sense of satisfaction (Freund & Ritter, 2009). This writer agrees that it is important as a human service professional to understand this concept so that if a client requests assistance with this, we as professionals can help them navigate these feelings in a way that allows them to feel satisfied while also taking proper precautions that they are capable of doing, without risking the chance of harming themselves or others. Helping them navigate this will also decrease the chance of them taking a financial risk that could permanently affect the rest of the life that they already believe is limited.
