True confession time. Are you stuck in a loop, or set of loops? Is there something (could be more than one thing) you are doing now that you kind of wish you could stop, snap out of, quit, or change/make better? You might go back to the "bad habit" we just asked you to write about, but possibly, after our class conversation, you will now come up with something even better. It could be anything . Maybe it has something to do with your relationship to a piece of technology you use every day. Maybe it has something to do with what TYPES of culture you habitually consume, possibly via that technology certain kinds of music, either listened to or played, your favorite social media feeds, videos, your bank account, your Amazon shopping cart. . Maybe it has something to do with the ways you regularly interact with people around you (family, romantic partners, co-workers), that you know are old ways, set ways-and are ways that are shaped by some element of technology Maybe it has something to do with what else you do A LOT OF, or ritually and repeatedly RETURN TO: could be art that you consume or make, could be food or some other substance. that you consume or prepare, could be an old routine or set of routines that you repeat, regularly, without thinking . Maybe it has something to do with an old routine you used to follow, but that you left behind for some reason, even though, in retrospect, it seems like kind of a good habit. So write a paragraph in which you describe this habit you want to change or improve or go back to Just describe it, in excruciating detail, but don't assess or judge it just yet Paragraph 2 (5 points): And now, and this is where you can wring your hands, and/or mount a scathing self-critique, if you feel like it write a second new paragraph, in which you propose to break or transform the habit loop that you just laid out in paragraph 1. What will it be? Why do you want to break or change it? What do you think would be the benefit? WHO would benefit- just you, or other people, or you AND other people? Finally, how might you go about modifying this habit-what experiment do you propose? Remember that the idea here is NOT simply to "cut something out of your life." This is not some kind of boot camp situation! In changing our cultural and/or technological loops, we're looking to see what BENEFITS might be gained from doing so. Think about it this way in changing a habit or loop, you will always be ADDING SOMETHING NEW to your daily cycle You might have to take something out, in order to find space for the addition, but you won't be ONLY eliminating things here. What would you like to take on, add? Lay it out in this second paragraph Submit this as a PDF or Word doc (if you compose it in Google Docs or Pages, EXPORT it as a PDF and upload that file here-don't submit a link or a pages filel), by clicking the Attach Files button Ideally you compose your work in a Word file if you compose it in Google docs, or Pages, export it as a Word or PDF file-and upload it here, by clicking the Attach Files button and choosing the file from your computer True confession time.
