Under certain circumstances, children automatically derive U.S. citizenship when their parents naturalize. If a child is an unmarried legal permanent resident under the age of 18, the child automatically becomes a U.S. citizen when both parents (or the surviving parent) naturalize. If the child is not a legal permanent resident at the time both parents naturalize, then the child becomes a citizen when the child establishes residency in the United States, as long as the child is still under the age of 18 and unmarried. Z.Y., who is 17 years old and unmarried, was born in a foreign country to non-U.S. citizen parents.
