Consider the following data requirements to develop a database system to keep information about research groups in a university. Research groups in university are special departmental groups working on different research areas. Each research group has a number of members headed by a group leader. Members could be senior students or academic staff, whereas the leader must be an academic staff. This database system should be able to show not only the group members, but also the experiments and research activities performed by each group. The database should be designed for only those students and staff participating in at least one research group. For each student joining a research group, the system should record the student ID, CPR, name (First, Middle, Last), the department majored at, and the date of joining a particular group that is recorded as the semester number and year. For academic staff, the system needs the staff ID, name, and the department working for. In addition, the university needs to know the number of groups leaded, and joined by each academic staff. When designing this system, it should be noted that a research group cannot be established unless it has at least three members and one of these members is assigned as the group leader. For each research group, the group name, and the main research area need to be recorded. The group research area could have a number of research sub-areas. A research group can also have a co- leader from external university. The system records the co-leader's ID, name and university name. According to university rules, each department is allowed to have up to fifteen research groups, and each group within the department should have distinct research area and distinct group name. In addition, the group leader should be one of the departmental staff and is allowed to lead only one group at a time, but members can join from any department in the university. The university assigns each department a distinct name, unique code, and separate building. A research group may run several research experiments. For each experiment, the experiment ID (unique within the group), experiment name, and a text of possible outcomes must be recorded. Any research experiment must be performed in one of the university research labs. For each of these labs, the system must store the lab unique ID, lab name, and the CPR and name of the technician responsible of this lab. According to university rules, each research lab should be under the responsibility of one of the research groups, so that the group can report back to the university each month about its lab(s) utilization and how to be improved.
