Question:
- We are asking you to take part in the Moral Machine (https://www.moralmachine.net/ Links to an external site.) experiment conducted by the MIT Media Lab. This experiment is part of their research to understand the human moral decision-making process, which will help guide the development of machines employing artificial intelligence, such as self-driving cars. The simulation prompts you with 15 scenarios in which you must choose what you perceive to be the lesser of two evils as an outside judge and jury.
- After you have completed the simulation - and you are welcome to complete it several times, browse alternative scenarios, or create your own; we ask you to take a screenshot of your results to submit alongside a written reflection that should address the following:
- Paragraph 1:
- Provide a self-reflection on the accuracy of the test? Do you think it is effective? Trustworthy? Helpful? Do you have any criticisms of the test?
- Paragraph 2:
- What can we learn from this simulation? Provide examples/scenarios of real-life implications of this test
- Paragraph 3:
- Citing at least two examples from the simulation, explain what the scenario was, what your decision was, and why you made that decision. How can your decision lead to further outcomes in the future, and are you comfortable with that? Explain.
- Paragraph 4:
- How will the outcomes of this simulation relate to past and future technological developments? What might we infer from previous technological innovations on an individual and societal level?
- Your response can be written in the first person as we encourage you to use your personal thoughts and feelings. We encourage you to be specific in citing examples from the simulator in your response, and any relevant course material or outside references. Write in complete sentences and paragraph structure - no bullet points.
