Question:
What I Bun manufactures dolls out of potatoes. Their signature product is the Bunmy doll, which sells in toy stores across the country.
The production process for the Bunmy doll begins in the Manufacturing department. The manufacturing department drills the holes for the eyes and attaches them to the potato. The dolls are then transferred to the Finishing Department, where a bow is applied and the product is packaged for shipment to toy stores. For the purposes of this question, we will be focusing on the Finishing Department.
The Finishing Department adds the bow (Part A) to the doll as soon as it is received from the Manufacturing Department.
When the doll is 95% complete, the Finishing Department wraps the doll in packaging products (Material "B"). Inspection takes place when production is 80% complete (after the addition of Part A, but before Part B).
Below is the production data recorded for the Finishing Department for the month of November:
Units of work-in-process inventory at November 1 | 15,725 |
Units of work-in-process inventory at November 30 | 31,500 |
% completion of units in work-in-process inventory at November 1 | 50% |
Cost of Part A in work-in-process inventory at November 1 | $171,875 |
Cost of Part B in work-in-process inventory at November 1 | $0 |
Transferred-in cost in work-in-process inventory at November 1 | $187,500 |
Conversion costs in work-in-process inventory at November 1 | $359,375 |
% completion of units in work-in-process inventory at November 30 | 92% |
Costs of Part A added in the month of November | $835,800 |
Costs of Part B added in the month of November | $93,750 |
Conversion costs (Direct labour and manufacturing overhead) added during November | $1,968,750 |
Transferred-in costs added during November | $1,317,975 |
Units started in November | 110,275 |
Units completed and transferred to finished goods inventory in November | 78,000 |
As potatoes do mold, normal spoilage is 6% of all good units that pass inspection.
The company uses the weighted-average method of process costing.
Required:
1.Create a production report for November. The production report should summarize total costs to account for and it should assign the costs to units completed and transferred to finished goods inventory, to abnormal and normal spoilage, and to units that remain in ending work in process inventory at the end of November (in other words, go through the 5 steps we learned in class!)
- Out of the total costs accounted for, how much is:
- Cost of goods manufactured
- Cost of goods sold
- Ending work in process inventory on the balance sheet.
