Question:
What is your opinion on these two post on current issues in the world today. Are they important? And why?
Protest in Iran for Women
As I think of current issues going on in todays world, my mind instantly goes to the protest in Iran for women to be able to have a right to decide if they want to wear a hijab or not. As in April 1983, the government set a law for all women to all be legally obligated to wear a hijab, even non-Musliums and foreigners visiting Iran. The government has set regulations for women which is not okay, they should have the right to be as they want, especially when it comes to what they want to wear. Thus has set a worldwide impact as many of us realize how grateful we are to live in a country where us women can have rights that they might not have. As I explore an article about the issue, a quote really stood out to me, "In Iran, the state is interfering in the rights of women — the choice of women — to decide what to wear and what not to wear. And that is exactly the problem faced by the Muslim girls in the schools of Karnataka"(Samar Ali). It's tragic that in some country's, context of power such as governments can restrict women's rights this much.
Gun Violence
The first thing that comes to my mind almost instantly, regarding domestic issues (and global), would be gun violence in this country and the lack of gun control. I still to this day don't understand the 'right to bear arms." I don't want to invalidate or judge other people that think differently than me, however I feel strongly and passionately about this issue. My supporting article states, "Mortality from firearms contributes more than 250,000 deaths each year worldwide, yet firearms still hold a massive commercial industry." It is horrifying that people can legally own a hand guns and semi-automatic guns and go and kill anyone. I am aware that people can use other things to kill or hurt people. However, a gun just seems so unnecessary. It seems like nowadays people care more about the constitution that was written light years ago and hunting rather than people's lives. The government has so much power, more power than we think. They are so powerful that we are all not even aware of 95% of the things that go on behind the scenes. They have all the power in the world to stop or at least help this issue (and no, arming teachers with guns is not the answer.) It is so upsetting because I am not sure what is stopping them from helping this issue in a way that is logical when they have the power to do so. I think this is a domestic and global issue. I think that the US enjoys being powerful in this sense as guns hold so much power to them and make a lot of money. Globalization impacts this because there have been many ways other countries have dealt with this overload of power, yet there has not been one humongous straight forward solution to this issue. No one is really influencing anyone to do better or do anything. This issue is so devastating.
