Need to closely supervised. Need strict rules and well-defined rewards and punishments Theory Y: Workers are self-engaged, committed, responsible and creative. Managers should construct an environment that promotes initiative and self-direction. Managers should let employees have authority and give them the resources necessary to achieve org goals. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: Self-actualization, Esteem, Love/Belonging, Safety, Physiological Self-Determination Theory extrinsic motivation could Undermind intrinsic motivation Needs that drive intrinsic motivation o Competence: the feeling of being qualified, knowledgeable and able to complete a task o Autonomy: the desire to have freedom and discretion in how you do your work o Relatedness: the desire to belong and be connected to others Extrinsic motivation Motivation that results from outcomes of task, given by others o Extrinsic outcomes: pay, bonuses, promotions, praise, free time, lack of disciplinary action Intrinsic motivation Can lead to a lack of autonomy/self-determination Motivation that comes from task performance itself o Intrinsic outcomes: enjoyment, sense of accomplishment, knowledge gain, personal expression Expectancy Theory Effort leads to higher performance which leads to an outcome Valence: Anticipated value of outcomes associated with performance Expectancy: Belief that exerting a high level of effort will result in successful performance of some task.
