With a huge sigh, Mariann deleted the latest email from one of the members of her fellow clinic reorganization committee. Picking up her phone and dialing her fianc, she mulled over the events of the last 2 months with a growing sense of unease. "Hey, she started, you won't believe what that clinic reorganization committee is doing now. I've told them over and over again that our wedding and honeymoon fall in the last 3 weeks before the report is due, and I've repeatedly offered to get started on different parts of the report, but they just keep telling me to chill out and that there's still plenty of time to get our work done. In fact, I just got an email suggesting that we go back and rerun a whole bunch of the predicted patient volume analyses that I know are already complete. Sure, maybe the rest of them have plenty of time, but not mel I'm worried that I'm going to end up having to work all night the whole week before the wedding and walk down the aisle with giant bags under my eyes. It's just not fair. I've been trying to plan ahead, and they are just not working with me on this." After venting a while longer, she hung up and returned to working on other clinic projects needing attention before her planned 3-week absence for the nuptials. Four Weeks Later "Marianna! What do you mean 'today's your last day in the office until 3 weeks from now? We have a ton left to do on this clinic reorganization report, and you're supposed to be part of this committeel I hope you're not expecting us to put your name on this report, given how little you've contributed!" shouted Kyle, the committee chair. "Kyle, I really don't know what to say. I've been telling you all since the first few committee meetings that I had plans for this time off! I've been offering to work ahead on anything that could be done ahead of time, and you just kept telling me not to get worked up about it. Did you think I was going to reschedule my wedding and honeymoon because the rest of you were determined to wait until the last minute?" "Well, excuse me for not keeping track of the details of your life. I assumed that if you wanted to be on this committee, you were committed to getting its work done, no matter what it takes. Clearly, I was mistaken about your commitment to organizing the clinic in a better way! Marianna walked away, muttering, and wondering if she'd still have a job after her "big day." She decided then and there that signing up for an important cross- departmental committee was something she was not going to do again. Case Study Discussion Questions 1. Do you think this committee could have prevented this conflict over getting its work done by the deadline? If so, how? If not, why not? 2. What could the committee chair have done early in the committee's life to ensure that its members were in agreement about its workplan? 3. Should the team include Marianna's name on its report? Why or why not? 4. If you were coaching the committee chair, what advice would you give Kyle about dealing with this situation?
