Writing for change requires mastery of persuasive writing techniques. This assignment requires you to write a persuasive letter that calls attention to a social issue of your choosing. In selecting a topic, be sure to choose an issue that you are passionate about, as you will be writing on the subject throughout the term in the 'Writing for Change' assignments and the Final Paper. Once you have identified a topic, peruse relevant government and organizational sources to familiarize yourself with existing laws/regulations related to your topic. Once you have conducted preliminary research, write a letter to your local MP (Member of Parliament) or MPP (Member of Provincial Parliament) advocating for action on your specific issue. When advocating for action, consider audience, purpose, tone and genre. Your letter should display a clear understanding of social/political issues related to your topic, as well as demonstrate a convincing call to action. The argument is well reasoned, persuasive, and takes into account opposing views while addressing them accordingly. Evidence is used appropriately to support the claims. Rhetoric (20 marks) The paper effectively utilizes all three types of rhetorical appeals - emotion, logic, and authority. The tone is appropriate to both audience and purpose. The language is suitable to the purpose and genre. An understanding of both emphasis and subtlety is present. Clarity (20 marks) Sentences are complete, coherent, and concise. Information is organized in logical manner. The letter demonstrates smooth transitions between ideas. There is an identifiable logic to the structure of the letter.
