17.2 Eco-Efficiency This approach, popularized by the World Business Council for Sustainable Devel- opment (WBCSD), is a way of reducing environmental impact while increasing economic value to a company [3]. It is meant to find "win-win" solutions in which environmental improvements also result in economic benefits, and has become popular among many corporations as an approach for moving their activ- ities and business model toward sustainability. The WBCSD defines eco-efficiency as follows. Eco-efficiency is achieved by the delivery of competitively-priced goods and services that satisfy human needs and bring quality of life, while progressively reducing ecological impacts and resource intensity throughout the life-cycle to a level at least in line with the Earth's carrying capacity. This definition goes on to say, "in short, it [eco-efficiency] is concerned with creating more value with less impact." Notice that this definition focuses on eco- nomic, environmental, and societal aspects, the demand and supply of ecosystem services, and the life cycle impact. Thus, it satisfies many of the requirements of sustainability that we covered in Section 3.4.
