The Everglades in Florida used to be a large, slow-moving body of water between Lake Okechobee and the Atlantic Ocean. These wetlands were drained, starting from about 1850, to develop farmland and for urban development. This was done by building canals that sped up the flow of water. The common attitude during the period of its draining was that the swamp did not have much use and caused pestilence. However, since 1990, the Everglades restoration project is working toward removing the canals and slowing down the flow of water to its natural state. Explain how the engineering attitude may have contributed to the draining of this swamp, and how holistic thinking may have contributed to recent efforts for its restoration.
