Estimates suggest that 80% of the nitrogen in fertilizer is lost to the environment and does not benefit crops. Investigate the negative side effects of nitrogen fertilizer runoff. If this lost nitrogen were used to produce biomass increase comparable to that attributed to the portion that increases crops, estimate the rate of atmospheric carbon uptake and compare to human emissions.
