It is not hard to balance a (brand new) ordinary pencil vertically upon its eraser. This is a configuration of stable classical equilibrium. Explain why in principle, even under the best of conditions (flat surface, symmetric pencil, no wind currents), the pencil is unstable due to quantum mechanical tunneling. Give a very rough estimate of the tunneling time, and compare to the age of the universe.
