There has been considerable concern about the safety of Tasers (electroshock weapons) and their possible role in the death of approximately 300 people in North America. The danger associated with Tasers was most recently brought to light due to the death of Robert Dziekanski, a Polish immigrant who died at the Vancouver International Airport immediately after being tasered by RCMP officers. According to the CEO of Taser International, however, there is “no other device with as much accountability” as a Taser and he maintains that Tasers actually save lives. What is the role of the law in regulating the products sold in the marketplace and ensuring their safety or relative safety?
