1. (25 marks) The financial year end for a large machine parts manufacturer will end in a week's time. The manager, Rebecca who is in charge of 10 salespersons is overwhelmed with work as is usual nearing the fiscal year end. She is currently finalizing the sales budget for the machine parts that she is in charge of, among other datelines that she has to meet. One of the dateline that is already due is to do the performance evaluations for the 10 salespersons who report to her. She always feel that the yearly staff evaluations are a waste of time having to fill up various sections of a long evaluation form. As far as she is concerned, all she knows about the subordinates' performance is based on the sales figures, which depend more on the products offered and geographic territory covered than the individual effort and motivation of each salesperson. She further reason to herself that the economic conditions in the country and the company's current situation is not too promising and regardless of her evaluations, nothing much in terms of rewards would be given. So being pressed for time, she did what many managers do and give everyone the best possible ratings believing that all will be happy and she would not have to deal with complaints and dissatisfactions among her staff. (a) Did Rebecca do what is considered as performance management and state the reasons for your answers? (b) Give an example of a performance management system (8 marks) (4 marks) (c) Many organizations have what is labeled a performance management system. However, there is a distinction between performance management and performance evaluation. Comment on the differentiation between the two. (13 marks) 1.
