Question:
The two or more strategies for addressing difficult participants within the interview process are first to make sure your appearance is appropriate and your energy level is acceptable to the interviewee. Also, the opening and welcoming statement of the interviewer's comments will set the tone for the interview. It is up to the interviewer to shape the start of the conversation to make the interviewee comfortable and not be guarded when answering questions (Saunders et al., 2019). Formulating appropriate questions to explore areas that are of interest is critical when conducting a successful in-depth interview (Saunders et al., 2019). The interviewing-the-interviewer approach can also help by (Chenail, 2011).
- Identifying personal feelings arising during the interview
- Being appreciative of the challenge of sharing knowledge of a topic
- Being patient in the interviewing process
- Being gracious of the vulnerability of the participant
- Identify a priori assumptions about the participants
The effectiveness of the identified strategies is based on scholarly research discussed by Chenail, 2011 where the advantages of interviewing the investigator approach can be accomplished without needing permission from the IRB. Interviewing the investigator helps the researcher gain the position of the research participant and receive a valuable perspective on the topic (Chenail, 2011). It is very important to make interviewees comfortable especially when it comes to sensitive topics. You do not want the interviewee to be guarded or hold back valuable information that will be beneficial to your research. Telephone interviews may be best for sensitive topics because this technique provides participants with the opportunity to disclose intimate and closely held experiences without feeling uncomfortable (Sturges and Hanrahan 2004). For example, breast cancer survivors (Elmir 2006, Elmir et al., 2010), women with sexually transmitted infections (East et al. 2010), and women with postnatal depression (Beck 2005). Supporting and encouraging individuals to unveil their experiences will help reduce any insecurity they foresee in the future and in their lives (Duffy 2002). Implementing strategies such as building a rapport and a trust bridge with the interviewee will enhance the research and bring credibility evidence to the process.
