Silverburg Grocery store is owned and operated by Daniel S. Silverburg. The grocery store maintains five checkout registers. At the beginning of a work shift, each cash register clerk is given a cash drawer with a predetermined amount of cash for making change for customers. At the end of the shift, the clerk and either the store manager or assistant manager count the clerk’s cash drawer. The cash in the drawer is compared to the total of the beginning cash plus the cash sales for the day. Silverburg has a policy that any cash shortage must be made up by the clerk, either at the end of the day or deducted from the clerk’s weekly pay. Silverburg believes that if the clerks have to make up shortages out of their own pockets, they will be more careful in making change. Is this a good policy?
